Russia Halts Bushehr Nuclear Plant Work Amid Iran Attacks

Russia has announced a halt to its ongoing work at the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran, citing a growing danger to the facility due to recent US and Israeli attacks on Iranian targets. The decision, reported by Reuters, follows an escalating conflict in the region. Alexej Lichatschow, head of Russia’s state atomic energy corporation Rosatom, stated from Moscow that explosions have been heard mere kilometers from the AKW. While acknowledging these explosions were aimed at military installations rather than the plant itself, Lichatschow warned via Interfax that “the threat grows as the conflict intensifies.” This preemptive measure underscores the heightened regional instability affecting critical infrastructure.

The Bushehr plant, Iran’s sole nuclear power facility, is strategically located approximately 760 kilometers south of Tehran on the Persian Gulf. Its Russian-designed reactor has been supplying electricity to Iran since 2011. Russia is currently involved in constructing a second reactor block at the site. Ahead of the recent attacks, Russian specialists’ families and children were reportedly evacuated to safety, indicating a clear anticipation of increased hostilities. Iranian media had previously reported on Tuesday that an airport in the port city, near Bushehr, had been bombarded, further highlighting the proximity of military actions to the nuclear site.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has provided updates on the status of Iran’s nuclear facilities. As of Wednesday, based on the latest available satellite imagery, the UN organization stated on X that “no damage to facilities where nuclear material is stored” was visible at Bushehr, confirming “no current risk of radioactive release.” However, the IAEA also noted visible “damage to two buildings” near the Natanz nuclear facility, close to Isfahan, following reports of “damage to the entrances” on Tuesday. Despite these damages, the IAEA found “no further effects” at Natanz and reiterated “no impact on other nuclear sites, including Bushehr” in the southeast. These assessments offer a crucial, if limited, view into the conflict’s impact on sensitive nuclear infrastructure.

These latest developments unfold against a backdrop of intensified conflict, including US and Israeli bombardments of key Iranian nuclear facilities in June. US President Donald Trump had then claimed the Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan facilities were “completely destroyed” during a twelve-day conflict, though the true extent of the damage remains unconfirmed. Those earlier attacks were explicitly aimed at preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. IAEA inspectors have been denied access to the Natanz facility since that June conflict. The IAEA assesses Iran as the only non-nuclear-weapon state enriching uranium to 60 percent, a level that raises proliferation concerns among Western nations who accuse Iran of seeking nuclear weapons—an accusation Tehran denies. Trump cited Iran’s nuclear program as a primary justification for the renewed attacks, underscoring the ongoing international dispute.
